Aluminum Foil Tape Thickness From 18u To 100u, How To Choose The Right Size For Your Project?

Mar 03, 2026 Leave a message

In the fields of HVAC, electronic shielding, and building insulation, the thickness of aluminum foil tape is a core parameter determining project quality. Many buyers are often confused by terms like 30u and 50u, unsure how to choose.

What is "u"?

In the tape industry, "u" refers to micrometers (μm).

1mm = 1000μm

Common thickness markings usually refer to the thickness of pure aluminum foil (excluding adhesive and backing paper).

Common Thickness Specifications and Their Performance Characteristics

According to industry standards, aluminum foil tape is mainly divided into the following four thickness ranges:

Thin: 18u - 25u

Characteristics: Extremely soft, excellent conformability.

Disadvantages: Low tear strength, prone to breakage during application.

Applications: Electromagnetic shielding (EMI) or temporary sealing of small gaps inside electronic products.

Standard Type:30u - 40u (Mainstream Market Sector)

Features: Achieves a perfect balance between cost and performance.

Applications: HVAC: Sealing of joints in glass wool pipe shells and duct panels.

Home Appliance Manufacturing: Fixing evaporator pipes in refrigerators and air conditioners.

Thickened Type: 50u - 75u

Features: High mechanical strength and strong puncture resistance.

Applications: High-pressure duct systems. For areas requiring long-term outdoor exposure or subject to physical friction risks.

Insulation Engineering: Used in conjunction with heavy-duty rock wool or composite materials.

Extra-Thick Type: 80u - 100u+

Features: Almost impossible to rip by hand; very high durability and shielding effect.

Applications: Specialized industrial insulation, shipbuilding, high-temperature laboratory environments, or as patch repairs on metal surfaces.

How Can You Pick the Correct Thickness for Your Requirements?

Please refer to the following flowchart when choosing thickness:

Take Surface Smoothness into Account

* Curved, irregular surfaces: Select between 30 and 35 u. Aluminum foil's elasticity increases with thickness, enabling tighter pipe wrapping and decreasing warping.

* Large-area, smooth surfaces: Select 50u and above. Greater thickness results in a smoother surface and a more professional visual appearance.

Take Environmental Pressure into Account

* High-pressure ducts: To avoid bursting under high-pressure airflow, 50 μ or more must be used.

* Normal pressure environments: 30u is sufficient for sealing requirements.

Consider Installation Method

Manual application: To avoid the ultra-thin aluminum foil curling during tearing, models with liners are advised.

In order to prevent the tape from breaking under machine tension, automatic tape applicators usually require a thickness of 40μm or more.

Watch Out for the "Total Thickness" Trap

When comparing estimates, make sure the supplier's thickness is: Foil Thickness: The thickness of pure aluminum foil, such as 40μm.

Aluminum foil plus adhesive layer equals total thickness (e.g., 40μm + 35μm = 75μm).

Test results that meet ASTM D-3652 requirements need to be available from reliable providers. Pay special attention to the type of glue you use if your application environment is hot (acrylic adhesives are typically more resistant to aging than rubber-based adhesives).
